Yoga is an ancient system of self-development that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Its earliest roots are found in the Vedas, sacred texts that explored the relationship between the human being, nature, and the cosmos. Later, the teachings were refined in the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, which introduced key ideas such as self-inquiry, meditation, and the path to liberation from suffering. Yoga was never just a physical practice; it was designed as a complete way of life to help individuals understand who they truly are beyond the body and mind.

The philosophy of yoga was formally organised by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, written around 2,000 years ago. In this text, yoga is defined as “the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.” Patanjali outlined the Eight-Limbed Path, which includes ethical living (yamas and niyamas), physical postures (asana), breath control (pranayama), sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation, and ultimately enlightenment or self-realisation. This framework shows that the physical poses most people associate with yoga are only one small part of a much larger spiritual and philosophical system.

At its heart, yoga teaches that suffering arises from ignorance of our true nature. We become attached to thoughts, emotions, and identities, forgetting that beneath them lies a deeper, peaceful awareness. Through consistent practice, whether through movement, breath, meditation, or ethical living, yoga helps us quieten the mind and reconnect with that inner stillness. This process leads to greater clarity, emotional balance, and a sense of purpose.

In the modern world, yoga is often approached as a wellness or fitness activity, but its deeper aim remains the same | union. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke” or “to unite,” referring to the union of body, mind, and spirit. Whether practiced for physical health, stress relief, or spiritual growth, yoga offers a path toward greater harmony within ourselves and with the world around us making it as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. ✨
